But I may have some words of comfort for you. According to www.plant-care.com/aralia-elegantissima.html , your Aralia elegantissima actually has two forms of foliage, juvenile and mature, depending partly on the pot size. The mature foliage is larger, longer and broader.

I rather think you have the juvenile form, and your MIL the mature. I will make no further comment upon the appropriateness of these terms!
